House of Fun is a horror-themed game crafted by BetSoft, one of the leading creators of digital casino games. The game, which was released in 2010, plays out on 5 reels and 3 rows. It pays in 30-win ways if you select the maximum pay-lines. However, you can select the pay-lines you want to play with, along with the betting level, which runs up to 5.

At 94.96%, the game’s RTP is slightly lower than average, but it does not significantly alter the winning potential.

The low-variance game is not packed with features, but there are as many as three bonus games, all triggered by different scatters. There is no wild in the base game. There is only one wild, which appears during the free spins game, and that too only on the middle reel, though fully stacked.

The action takes place in a haunted house, with two teenagers and a dog trapped inside. If you can trigger the relevant scatters, you can play a game that can help them escape.

House of Fun Overview and Theme

House of Fun is touted as a horror-themed game, but there is nothing eerie about it, apart from the atmosphere it creates. Even the music is not creepy. The game begins with the two youngsters, Jane and Paul, collapsing on a deserted road as the dog looks on. The scene actually acts as an epilogue, depicting what happens when the duo escape. When the game begins, they are frozen in terror at what they witness on the reels, which looks more mysterious than terrifying.

The design and graphics are outstanding in creating an aura of mystery. The reels are depicted on a section of the outer wall of the haunted house, and flanked by sculptures of winged bats on top of the walls. The symbols consist of four elderly men who look more comical than frightening. Other symbols are candelabra, the bat, a cat, and a man’s portrait. There is also an ornately decorated mirror frame, but the mirror looks more like white glass.

House of Fun Features

As mentioned, the game has minimal bonus features, but the power comes from the three bonus games. There is no wild in the base game. There are no multipliers in the base game or the bonus games. However, all that is compensated for by three different scatters, one of which is a special symbol. The two other scatters are part of the regular symbols on the reels.

Free Spins Round

The Jackbox is a special symbol that acts as the scatter and triggers the free spins round. It only appears on the three centre reels, and when three of them do, you are awarded 3 or more free spins, along with a cash award of 300 coins if you bet at the maximum level. A seemingly spooky creature pops up on the centre reel, as if from a grave, and acts as the stacked wild. It remains throughout the round and helps make winning combos by substituting for all symbols barring the scatters.

Click Me Feature

One of the gentlemen in the house is surprisingly called the Mad Hatter. When three of these gentlemen appear on consecutive reels on 1, 2, and 3 win ways, the Click Me mini-game is triggered. Some of the symbols are replaced by three ‘Click Me’ symbols on the reels. Different cash amounts are hidden behind them. You click on any of them to reveal the hidden sum. Each sum enables you to buy a skyscraper on the skyline. You get several chances to click, and are awarded the sum at the end of the game.

Escape Round

The third scatter is an eerie-looking door knocker. Get 3 or more of them to appear anywhere on the reels simultaneously, and you will give Jane, Paul, and the dog an opportunity to escape. The youngster comes across four doors, three of which hide the amateurish spook of the free spins round. You get several chances to click on the doors. When you open the door and the spook does not appear, it means the kids have escaped. You will be paid according to the number of clicks it took.

How to Play House of Fun

You must first choose your bet along with the number of win ways you want to power the game with. When you click on the hamburger menu at the top left and then hit ‘Change Bet’, you will be given options to choose your bet size, bet level, and number of win ways. The minimum bet at level 1 with 1 pay-line is $0.01. At level 5, the maximum bet is $30 with all 30 win ways active.

To win in the games, you need to get 2 to 5 identical symbols on the reels. There is no wild to help you in the main game. Two of the elderly gentlemen and the grumpy cat pay for appearing on just two reels from the left. The suited man with a wide mouth is the most valuable symbol, while the so-called gilded mirror and man in the portrait pay out the least. You win according to your bet size, bet level, and number of ways to win. The most you can win on a single maximum bet is 63,220 coins.

Tips to Win at House of Fun

All you can do with slot machines is keep them spinning and hope for the best. Slots are games of chance; there are no skills at play. No one can give you any advice or tips on how to play; you cannot employ any strategy. Still, there are a couple of things you can do:

Play in Demo Mode

Practicing in demo mode is the best way to understand the game, get to know the different possibilities and scenarios, and see how the game pays out. You can learn where and how to change your bets, and even the number of pay-lines. Take as many rounds as you need before moving on to real money play.

Bet Smart

Play with the highest bet you can afford to lose. Choose as many pay-lines as there are available. The bet size and win ways buttons will display the values of all winning combinations in the paytable. Read the rules and change your bet according to your own circumstances..

Our Verdict on House of Fun

House of Fun is more amusing than anything, and the element of horror, if any, is subtle. The graphics are sophisticated, as befits any BetSoft game. The narrative provides a twist right at the start.

The math of the game is another appealing aspect. The betting window covers all budgets. You can make permutations and combinations of bet size, bet levels, and pay-lines. The game inverts the ratio of wilds to scatters. There are three of the latter, but none in the base game. The 3 bonus games can effectively take you towards the maximum win potential of House of Fun.
